IPOH: The Perak Social Welfare Department (JKM) is waiting for results regarding its application for a premises to be turned into a welfare home supervised by the Society of Caring Hands Ipoh at Taman Lim.

Regarding the ownership of the premises, its director, Rosmahwati Ishak said they needed to wait for the review and results from its legal advisor as well as the JKM headquarters.

“However, previously, State Women Development, Social Welfare, Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Rusnah Kassim mentioned that the owner of the shelter home should seek an alternative premises.

“Nevertheless, it is up to the shelter home whether to look for other premises or remain there,” she told reporters after attending a dialogue session with members of the Perak Association for the Blind here yesterday.

When asked on accusations of the abuse of 12 girls at the Caring Hands (Kakum Karangal) welfare home, Rosmahwati said they had sent a counsellor over there following the complaint.

“The girls are reportedly in good condition. Let the police carry on with their investigation as the duty of JKM is to provide protection to the children,” she said.

The Society of Caring Hands Ipoh had lodged two police reports on cases of abuse on June 11 and Aug 12.

According to a newspaper report, 12 girls of the home were allegedly abused physically and emotionally for years, with no action taken by the authorities.

It also said that the victims claimed they were lashed on the soles of their feet, hands and buttocks. They also complained of being put in a dog’s cage and deprived of food for the slightest of mistakes.

Medical examinations were then carried out by the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh, and the results corroborated the children’s complaints of continuous abuse.

The home, opened in 2004, currently accommodates 12 female children and teenagers aged between nine and 18 years.
