PETALING JAYA: Even as two East Coast states evacuated 3,700 people today to escape rivers that have swelled to dangerous levels, the weatherman has warned of more rain to come tomorrow.

The meteorological department has said continuous rainfall is expected tomorrow in Kelantan’s Pasir Puteh, Machang, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang districts and almost all districts in Terengganu.

Terengganu is the worst hit so far with six of its rivers swelling to dangerous levels.

The met has predicted a wet new year’s eve and new year in several states with continuous heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.

In a statement, it said continuous rains are expected in Pahang (Maran, Pekan, Kuantan and Jerantut districts) too.

The department has also issued a warning of thunderstorms and strong winds in Selangor (Sepang and Hulu Langat districts), Negeri Sembilan (Tampin, Rembau, Seremban and Port Dickson district), Malacca, Johor (Segamat, Tangkak, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Johor Bahru, Kulai and Pontian districts).

In Sabah (Kudat and Sandakan) and Sarawak (Kapit in Song District), Bintulu in Tatau District), Mukah, Sibu, Sarikei, Betong, Sri Aman and Kuching are expected to experience thunderstorms and strong winds.

It said there will be isolated showers and thunderstorms for the next seven days nationwide.

Meanwhile, according to the welfare department’s InfoBanjir app, as of 6.35pm, 3,764 people have been evacuated, with 2,538 evacuated in Terengganu and 1,226 evacuated in Kelantan.

In Terengganu, the water levels at six rivers have exceeded dangerous levels. These rivers are Sungai Marang, Sungai Besut at Kampung LA, Sungai Besut at Jambatan Keruak, Sungai Chalok, Sungai Nerus and Sungai Telemong.

Meanwhile, Terminal Bersepadu Selatan’s has yet to receive any notifications of cancelled express bus trips to and from Terengganu and Kelantan.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) said train services to the East Coast would continue despite the floods.

KTMB head of corporate communications Ridhwan Arshad told FMT the rail lines from Gemas to Gua Musang and Tanah Merah were unaffected for now and should the floods affect train services, KTMB would provide alternative transport such as bus services to ferry those stranded to the nearest stations.

The Fire and Rescue Departments of Terengganu and Kelantan could not be reached for updates.

The Terengganu education department has announced the closure of 33 schools in the state due to the floods, while the Kelantan education department said it will decide on any school closures tomorrow.
